Nature at Pine Mountain Club
Learn about the plants, animals, geography, and natural systems that shape life in our mountain community.
Pine Mountain Club is surrounded by thriving forests, diverse wildlife, and unique terrain that together create a rich natural environment. Living here means coexisting with the non-human world every day - on the ground, in the trees, and overhead.
Whether you’ve lived here for decades or are discovering PMC for the first time, understanding our environment helps protect it and makes living here more rewarding.
Living Close to Nature
One of the most unique aspects of PMC is how close nature truly is. No home in Pine Mountain Club is more than 200–300 yards from natural habitat, whether through greenbelts or the perimeter of Association land.
You don’t need to hike a trail to experience nature here. Simply sitting on a deck or walking through your neighborhood often means sharing space with wildlife and native plants.
Wildlife in and Around PMC
Wild animals regularly move throughout the community, including:
- Black bears
- Mountain lions
- Wildcats and foxes
- Coyotes and raccoons
- Tree and ground squirrels
- Chipmunks and cottontail rabbits
- A wide variety of bird species, including raptors
Interactions with wildlife can be exciting, unexpected, or sometimes challenging. Concerns may include bears, mountain lions, rodents, insects, and other native species. Learning how to respond appropriately keeps both people and animals safe.
Feeding Wildlife Policy
To protect wildlife and residents, feeding wild animals is prohibited throughout PMC.
This includes:
- Birdseed, suet, peanuts
- Hummingbird feeders
- Any food intended for wildlife
Even bird feeders can attract bears and other animals, leading to dangerous habituation. While this rule limits close-up bird viewing from homes, it plays a critical role in preserving natural behavior and reducing human-wildlife conflicts.
